Tarot and Astrology

Rider-Waite Tarot VI The Lovers and Gemini ClefThere are those who say that; "the Tarot is Astrology brought to earth." As both are admittedly "symbolic languages," it does not take a great deal of familiarity with one or the other before certain similarities and connections become evident and, in fact, even logical.

Connecting aspects of these two sciences can be attributed in great part to the organization known as The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The original order, located in England, was founded in 1888 and was associated with the Rosicrucian Order.

Although the original organization did not last that long, (it was disbanded in 1910), its notable members made significant strides in connecting certain aspects of the two. In particular we are speaking of Arthur E. Waite and Pamela Colman Smith, (creators of the Rider/Waite/Smith Tarot deck), and Aleister Crowley and Lady Frieda Harris, (creators of the Crowley Tarot deck).

In designing their decks, both teams remained relatively faithful to the astrological classifications developed by The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

In short, while both Tarot and Astrology share certain symbolic results, there remains much that is germane only to its own science. Where similarities do exist, they can and should be viewed as enhancements, validations, and additional information to the study at hand.
